Cambodia’s Prime Minister, Hun Sen, recently declared his intention to step down from his position after an impressive victory for the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) in the general election, securing 120 out of 125 parliamentary seats. Hun Sen, who has been serving as Prime Minister since 1985, will hand over the reins to his eldest son, Hun Manet, the current deputy commander-in-chief of the armed forces, on August 22, 2023.
In his announcement, Hun Sen expressed his desire to create an opportunity for a new generation of leaders to assume command. Despite stepping down from the prime ministerial role, he will continue to play vital roles as the head of the CPP and as a member of the National Assembly.
Hun Sen’s 38-year tenure in power has been marked by significant achievements, including leading Cambodia to middle-income status, focusing on healthcare, education, and infrastructure development, and fostering national reconciliation. During his rule, he has been able to weather accusations of corruption made by opposition politicians, rights groups, and environmental activists, maintaining a relatively clean record within his ranks.
Hun Sen’s decision to step down represents a significant shift in Cambodia’s political landscape, as the country prepares to welcome a new leader for the first time in several decades.
