Clare Lombardelli appointed as OECD Chief Economist

  • The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) appointed UK Treasury Adviser, Clare Lombardelli as the next Chief Economist, with effect from 2 May 2023.
  • She has 20 years of experience in economic analysis and policy-making in the United Kingdom.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD; French: Organisation de coopération et de développement économiques, OCDE) is an intergovernmental organisation with 38 member countries, founded in 1961 to stimulate economic progress and world trade. It is a forum whose member countries describe themselves as committed to democracy and the market economy, providing a platform to compare policy experiences, seek answers to common problems, identify good practices, and coordinate domestic and international policies of its members.

UAE names ADNOC oil chief Sultan al-Jaber as President of COP28

  • The president of the UAE’s national oil company Sultan al-Jaber was named as president of this year’s COP28 climate talks.
  • The chief executive of the ADNOC will be the first CEO to take the role at the UN summit.
  • Jaber is also the Gulf state’s special envoy for climate change and has taken part in more than 10 COP meetings.
  • The Conference of Parties or COP is the world’s biggest climate conference.

Gabon names vice-president and new prime minister

  • President of Gabon, Ali Bongo has appointed the country’s first female Prime Minister, Rose Christiane Ossouka Raponda (59) as the vice-president of country.
  • She was appointed as the country’s PM in July 2020.
  • She was also named budget minister in 2012 before being elected mayor of Libreville (Capital) in 2014.
  • While, former minister, Alain-Claude Bilie By Nze will replace PM Ossouka Raponda to form a new government.

Meta appoints Vikas Purohit as Director of Global Business Group India

  • Facebook-parent Meta has appointed Vikas Purohit as Director of its Global Business Group in India.
  • He will lead the strategy and delivery units under the advertising wing.
  • He has served as the chief executive at Tata CLiQ till October 2022.
  • He will report to Arun Srinivas, Director and Head of Ads Business for Meta in India.
  • He has also worked in companies such as Amazon, Reliance Brands, Aditya Birla Group and Tommy Hilfiger.

CJI Chandrachud to be conferred with ‘Award for Global Leadership’

  • Chief Justice of India (CJI), D.Y. Chandrachud has been selected for the “Award for Global Leadership” by the Harvard Law School Center in recognition of his lifetime service to the legal profession in the country and around the world.
  • The award will be presented to him at an online event on January 11, 2023.
  • He took over as the 50th CJI on November 9, 2022.
  • He obtained an LL.M. degree and a Doctorate in Juridical Sciences (SJD) from the Harvard Law School.

Benjamin Netanyahu sworn-in as new Prime Minister of Israel

  • Benjamin Netanyahu (73) has been sworn-in as the new prime minister of Israel for a sixth time, after Israel’s parliament (Knesset) has passed a vote of confidence in new government.
  • He is the longest-serving Prime Minister of Israel.
  • Out of 120 members, 63 lawmakers have voted in favour of new government.

Praveen Kumar Srivastava appointed as acting Central Vigilance Commissioner

  • Government of India has appointed Vigilance Commissioner, Praveen Kumar Srivastava as the acting Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC).
  • He has replaced Suresh N Patel, who completed his term as the chief of CVC on December 24, 2022.
  • Srivastava is a 1988-batch IAS officer of Assam-Meghalaya cadre.
  • He was retired as Secretary (Coordination), Cabinet Secretariat on January 31, 2022.
  • The tenure of a CVC is of four years or till the incumbent attains the age of 65 years.

Anil Kumar Lahoti appointed as Chairman of Railway Board

  • Former General Manager of Central Railway, Anil Kumar Lahoti has been appointed as the Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Railway Board with effect from January 1, 2023. He will replace Vinay Kumar Tripathi.
  • Lahoti belongs to the 1984 batch of Indian Railway Service of Engineers (IRSE). He was appointed as the general manager of Central Railway in July 2021.
  • He has also worked in several key positions in both zonal railways and the railway board in Delhi.

Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ elected as PM of Nepal for third time

CPN-Maoist Centre chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ appointed as the new Prime Minister of Nepal for the third time. President Bidya Devi Bhandari appointed Prachanda as the prime minister as per Article 76 (2) of the constitution this evening.

According to the sources, Prachanda along with CPN-UML chairman K P Sharma Oli, Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) president Ravi Lamichhane, Rastriya Prajatantra Party chief Rajendra Lingden among other top leaders earlier went to the President’s Office with a proposal to appoint him as the new Prime Minister, .

Prachanda has support of 165 lawmakers in the 275-member House of Representatives which includes CPN-UML with 78, CPN-MC with 32, RSP with 20, RPP with 14, JSP with 12, Janamat with 6 and Nagarik Unmukti Party with 3.

Suhel Ajaz Khan appointed India’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia

  • Suhel Ajaz Khan has been appointed as the next envoy to Saudi Arabia.
  • Presently he is India’s ambassador to the Republic of Lebanon.
  • A member of the 1997 batch of the IFS, Khan has spent much of his diplomatic career in the Middle East and can speak Arabic.
  • This will be Khan’s third stint in Saudi Arabia.
  • He served a stint in Jeddah as Consul at the Consulate-General of India in that city.
  • He was also deputy chief of mission in Riyadh between 2017 and 2019.
