Four successful flight trials of High-speed Expendable Aerial Target (HEAT) – ABHYAS were conducted by the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) at the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur, Odisha. The trials took place from January 30 to February 02, 2024. These trials involved a revised robust configuration utilizing a single booster designed by the Advanced Systems Laboratory, Hyderabad, aimed at providing reduced launch acceleration.
Mission Objectives
The trials were conducted with four distinct mission objectives, including the safe release of the booster, launcher clearance, and achieving the required end of launch velocity. Each objective was successfully accomplished during the flight trials.
Parameters Validated
Various critical parameters such as endurance, speed, manoeuvrability, altitude, and range were successfully validated during the flight trials, showcasing the capabilities of the ABHYAS system.
Design and Development
ABHYAS, designed by DRDO’s Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), offers a realistic threat scenario for the practice of weapon systems. It is equipped with an autonomous flying capability, facilitated by an indigenously developed autopilot by ADE. The system also incorporates Radar Cross Section, Visual, and Infrared augmentation systems necessary for weapon practice.
Ground Control System
The system includes a laptop-based Ground Control System, allowing integration with the aircraft. This system enables pre-flight checks, data recording during the flight, replay after the flight, and post-flight analysis. ABHYAS is characterized by minimum logistical requirements and is cost-effective compared to imported equivalents.
Production Agencies
The recently tested systems were realized through Production Agencies – Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Defence. ABHYAS is now ready for production with the identified production agencies.
Export Potential
ABHYAS has export potential and can be offered to friendly countries, showcasing its role in strengthening international partnerships.
Raksha Mantri’s Congratulations
Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the Armed Forces, and the Industry for the successful flight trials of ABHYAS. He emphasized that the development of this system meets the requirements of aerial targets for the Armed Forces.
Chairman DRDO’s Appreciation
Secretary, Department of Defence R&D, and Chairman DRDO Dr Samir V Kamat appreciated the efforts of the teams associated with the design, development, and testing of the ABHYAS system.
