Oommen Chandy, the highly regarded former Chief Minister of Kerala, peacefully passed away at the age of 79. Known for his unwavering commitment to public service, Chandy was a prominent legislator who tirelessly represented the Puthupally constituency in Kottayam district. With two terms as Chief Minister, he played a pivotal role in shaping the state’s political landscape. Born on October 30, 1943, Chandy’s remarkable journey in politics began through active involvement in the Kerala Students Union (KSU) and the Youth Congress, paving the way for a remarkable career dedicated to serving the people of Kerala.

Chandy’s foray into politics started with his role as the president of the Youth Congress in 1970. Throughout his extensive political career, he held various crucial positions, demonstrating his leadership capabilities and unwavering dedication. He served as the State general secretary of KSU in 1965, followed by his appointment as its State president in 1967. Chandy’s educational pursuits included attending St. George High School in Kottayam and pursuing studies at CMS College, Kottayam, SB College Changanassery, and the Government Law College, Thiruvananthapuram.

The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) governments in Kerala witnessed Chandy’s capable leadership on two occasions. He served as the Chief Minister from August 31, 2004, to May 12, 2006, and later assumed the position again from May 18, 2011, to May 20, 2016. During these tenures, Chandy made significant contributions to the state’s development and welfare. Additionally, he held important ministerial portfolios, including Labour Minister, Home Minister, and Finance Minister, in various cabinets.

Chandy’s influence extended beyond his role as Chief Minister. He was an integral part of the Kerala Legislative Assembly, having been first elected in 1970. His deep involvement in the Congress-backed trade union, INTUC, and his service as the convener of the UDF during two periods (1982-86 and 2001-2004) further exemplify his dedication to political engagement. Throughout his more than five decades representing the Puthupally constituency, Chandy exhibited exceptional political acumen and played a significant role in the internal dynamics of the state unit of the Congress party.

Widely admired and respected, Chandy endeared himself to the masses through his strong connect with the people. As Chief Minister, he introduced the innovative ‘Mass Contact’ program to proactively address public concerns and prioritize their welfare.
