Former Punjab Assembly deputy speaker, Bir Devinder Singh, breathed his last at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh. Beginning his political journey as a leader of the All India Students’ Federation (AISSF), Bir Devinder was first elected as an MLA from Sirhind in 1980 under the Congress party’s banner. In 2002, he secured a victory from the Kharar assembly constituency. During the tenure of Amarinder Singh-led Congress regime in Punjab, he held the position of deputy speaker of the Vidhan Sabha from 2003 to 2004. In 2016, he was expelled from the Congress and subsequently joined the Shiromani Akali Dal (Taksali) in 2019. Leaders from various political backgrounds expressed their condolences upon hearing the news of Bir Devinder’s demise.
