The Greater Chennai City Police (GCP) has launched the ‘Police Drone Unit’ to enhance aerial surveillance and expedite the detection of criminal activities. The inauguration of this initiative took place at Besant Avenue, Adyar, in the presence of the outgoing Tamil Nadu Director General of Police (DGP), C Sylendra Babu, and Chennai Police Commissioner Shankar Jiwal. The GCP’s press release highlighted that the project, with an approximate cost of Rs 3.6 crore, will empower law enforcement with advanced drone technology.
The introduction of drones in police operations will serve as an invaluable asset in monitoring and securing expansive areas with increased efficiency. These drones, equipped with state-of-the-art surveillance capabilities, will play a vital role in identifying potential threats, monitoring crowd gatherings, and assisting in traffic management.
The Police Drone Unit comprises a total of nine drones, classified into three categories: Quick Response Surveillance Drones (6), Heavy Lift Multirotor Drone (1), and Long Range Survey Wing Place (2). Each drone is equipped with built-in artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, enabling effective operation within a range of 5-10 km from the ground station.
