Defence Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd has successfully delivered the survey vessel INS Nirdeshak to the Indian Navy. This significant milestone was announced by an official on Tuesday.
Details of INS Nirdeshak
- Second Vessel in Series: INS Nirdeshak is the second in a series of four survey vessels being constructed by GRSE. The first vessel was delivered to the Navy 10 months ago, in December 2023.
- Size and Capacity: At 110 meters long, INS Nirdeshak is recognized as the largest survey vessel for the Indian Navy built in the country.
Role and Capabilities
- Joining the Fleet: INS Nirdeshak will join INS Sandhayak, the first Survey Vessel Large (SVL) delivered by GRSE. Together, these vessels are vital for keeping the naval forces equipped with the latest survey data essential for operations.
- Survey and Data Collection: The Sandhayak-class SVLs are capable of undertaking surveys of maritime limits and collecting oceanographic and geographical data for defense applications. This enhances India’s maritime capabilities.
- Combat and Support Functions: These vessels can carry a helicopter and participate in low-intensity combat, while also serving as hospital ships.

“We are proud to deliver this ship 10 months after the first one in the series,” said Cmde P R Hari (retd), Chairman and Managing Director of GRSE. He emphasized the high percentage of indigenous content in these warships, aligning with the Union government’s policy of self-reliance.
