The state government of Gujarat has announced a substantial initiative to enhance healthcare access by doubling the insurance coverage under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY). Effective from July 11, beneficiaries in Gujarat will now receive an increased insurance cover of Rs 10 lakhs, compared to the previous coverage of Rs 5 lakhs. This progressive decision aims to benefit approximately 1.78 crore Ayushman Bharat card holders in Gujarat, significantly improving their access to quality medical treatment and providing greater financial security.
Under the expanded coverage of PMJAY, beneficiaries in Gujarat will have access to free medical treatment at over two thousand government hospitals and 795 private hospitals across the state. This extensive network of healthcare facilities will play a vital role in delivering timely and high-quality healthcare services to the insured population. The inclusion of private hospitals in the scheme ensures beneficiaries have a wider range of healthcare providers to choose from, offering increased options for their medical needs.
Gujarat has demonstrated commendable progress in the implementation of PMJAY, evident from its claims record. The state has successfully processed over 39 lakh claims, securing the fifth position in the country in terms of the number of claims received. Moreover, Gujarat has attained the second position in terms of the amount of claims cleared under PMJAY. This achievement reflects the state government’s effective efforts in streamlining the insurance claims process, enabling beneficiaries to swiftly access their entitled benefits.
By doubling the insurance cover under PMJAY, the Gujarat government is proactively addressing healthcare accessibility and affordability for its residents. The increased coverage will provide crucial financial protection to vulnerable sections of society, allowing them to seek necessary medical treatments without the burden of substantial out-of-pocket expenses. This initiative aligns with the overarching objective of PMJAY to ensure universal health coverage and promote equitable healthcare services throughout the nation.
