India and Sri Lanka Launch Joint Military Exercise MITRA SHAKTI – 2023

The ninth iteration of the Joint Military exercise “Exercise MITRA SHAKTI-2023” kicked off today in Aundh (Pune). Scheduled from November 16th to 29th, 2023, the exercise sees the participation of a 120-member Indian contingent, primarily composed of troops from the MARATHA LIGHT INFANTRY Regiment. Representing the Sri Lankan side are personnel from the 53 Infantry Division, with 15 members from the Indian Air Force and five from the Sri Lankan Air Force also actively engaged in the exercise.

The primary objective of the exercise is to collaboratively practice Sub Conventional operations in accordance with Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter. The exercise encompasses the coordination of joint responses during counter-terrorist operations. Tactical maneuvers such as raids, search and destroy missions, heliborne operations, and more will be rehearsed. Additionally, the exercise curriculum includes Army Martial Arts Routine (AMAR), combat reflex shooting, and Yoga.

Exercise MITRA SHAKTI – 2023 will incorporate the use of Drones and Counter Unmanned Aerial Systems, along with helicopters. Both sides will jointly practice securing helipads and conducting casualty evacuations during counter-terrorist operations. The collective efforts aim to enhance interoperability among troops, minimizing risks to life and property while prioritizing the interests and agenda of the United Nations in peacekeeping operations.

The exchange of views and practices during the exercise will cover a broad spectrum of combat skills, enabling mutual learning among participants. This sharing of best practices is expected to strengthen defense cooperation between the Indian Army and the Sri Lankan Army, fostering robust bilateral relations between the two neighboring nations.
