India is poised to make history by assuming the role of Chair for UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee, a first for the nation. Mr. Vishal V Sharma, the Permanent Representative of India to UNESCO, announced this groundbreaking development, marking a momentous chapter in India’s cultural and historical narrative.
New Delhi is set to host the prestigious World Heritage Committee session in July, turning it into the global focal point for discussions on heritage preservation. This significant responsibility underscores India’s dedication to protecting and promoting the world’s cultural and natural treasures.
As per UNESCO’s official notice, the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee is scheduled to take place in New Delhi from July 21 to July 31, 2024. The decision to hold the session in India’s capital emphasizes the country’s rich and diverse cultural heritage, providing an ideal setting for global discussions.
The World Heritage Committee, comprised of representatives from 21 member states, plays a pivotal role in assessing potential additions to UNESCO’s prestigious World Heritage Sites list. Additionally, it oversees the implementation of conservation measures for existing sites facing challenges.
