India has accomplished a momentous feat by being re-elected as the President of the Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD) General Conference (GC) for an extraordinary third successive term. This remarkable achievement, announced by Apurva Chandra, Secretary of the Information & Broadcasting Ministry, marks a historic milestone in the annals of AIBD and reflects the profound confidence bestowed upon India by broadcasting entities spanning the Asia-Pacific region and the global arena.
Founded in 1977 under the auspices of UNESCO, AIBD stands as a prestigious institution boasting 92 member organizations across 44 countries. Among its members are 26 government representatives from diverse nations, encompassing 48 broadcasting authorities and broadcasters, in addition to 44 affiliates hailing from 28 regions and countries across Asia, the Pacific, Europe, Africa, the Arab States, and North America.
India’s involvement in AIBD runs deep, as it is one of the organization’s founding members. Representing the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India, Prasar Bharati, India’s public service broadcaster, plays an integral role within AIBD. This enduring partnership underscores India’s unwavering commitment to advancing and enriching the broadcasting landscape on both regional and global scales.
The pivotal moment in India’s broadcasting history unfolded during the 21st General Conference & Associated Meetings 2023, presided over by Gaurav Dwivedi, the Chief Executive Officer of Prasar Bharati. Hosted in Port Louis, Mauritius, from October 2 to 4, this conference served as the platform for recognizing India’s exceptional leadership. The event centered on fostering a vibrant and cohesive electronic media environment throughout the Asia-Pacific region by facilitating strategic policy formulation and resource development.
