India Takes the Lead in Green Shipping: Selected as Pioneer for IMO Green Voyage 2050 Project

India has taken a significant step towards greener shipping by being chosen as the lead country for the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Green Voyage 2050 Project. This initiative aims to assist developing nations in their efforts to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from ships, contributing to global climate change mitigation.

India’s leadership extends beyond the project itself, with the government actively implementing various measures to promote sustainability in the maritime sector. These include:

  • Supporting innovative green technologies: Several projects have been selected for funding under the Green Voyage 2050 Project, focusing on initiatives like waste heat recovery systems on bulk carriers, greening of inland ferries, and electric hybrid tugs.
  • Adhering to international regulations: As a signatory to the International Convention for Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL), India has implemented all regulations pertaining to carbon emissions on Indian ships. These regulations focus on enhancing energy efficiency and achieving progressive carbon intensity reduction.
  • Establishing a National Centre of Excellence: The first-of-its-kind National Centre of Excellence for Green Ports and Shipping (NCoEGPS) has been established to provide policy and regulatory support for adopting green technologies and fostering carbon neutrality in the shipping sector.
  • Promoting sustainable fuels: Recognizing the importance of alternative fuels, the government has permitted the use of sustainable biofuels and blends as a cost-effective option for Indian ships.
  • Monitoring fuel consumption: A digital platform has been implemented to track fuel consumption by ships, enabling efficient operations and emissions reduction.

These proactive measures not only demonstrate India’s commitment to a sustainable maritime future but also position the nation as a leader in this global transition. By collaborating with other developing countries through the Green Voyage 2050 Project, India can share its expertise and accelerate the collective journey towards cleaner shipping.
