In a landmark event that marks the strengthening of defense cooperation between India and Vietnam, the decommissioned Indian Naval Ship Kirpan, a dedicated corvette that loyally served the Indian Navy for 32 years, has found a new home in the Vietnam People’s Navy (VPN). A formal ceremony held at Cam Ranh, Vietnam, marked the historic occasion of India transferring a fully operational corvette to a foreign nation for the very first time.

This significant gesture of transferring INS Kirpan underscores the deepening defense ties between India and Vietnam, solidifying their commitment to enhancing maritime security in the Indo-Pacific region. With shared concerns about China’s growing maritime influence, India and Vietnam have consistently bolstered their defense partnership.

The collaboration between the two nations is not limited to this transfer alone. In 2022, India previously handed over 12 high-speed patrol guard boats to Vietnam, showcasing their mutual commitment to safeguarding maritime interests. Notably, five of these patrol guard boats were constructed in India, while the remaining were built in Vietnam with the support of an Indian Line of Credit.

Moreover, India has played a crucial role in enhancing Vietnam’s defense technological capabilities. This includes India’s sponsorship of an Army Software Park in Vietnam, generously supported by a grant of $5 million. This significant support has empowered Vietnam to address security challenges and protect its national maritime interests more effectively.

The mutual logistics support agreement signed between India and Vietnam further strengthens their strategic partnership. Both countries share maritime territorial disputes and have demonstrated a united front in addressing regional security concerns.

Admiral Hari Kumar, expressing confidence in the Vietnam People’s Navy, believes that the transfer of INS Kirpan will empower them to protect their national maritime interests and contribute significantly to regional security. This exchange of naval assets symbolizes India’s unwavering commitment to fostering peace, stability, and cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region, solidifying its position as a reliable and steadfast partner in the region’s pursuit of maritime security.
