In a momentous occasion, Brigadier Sanjay Kumar Mishra, a highly regarded ophthalmologist affiliated with the Indian Army’s Research and Referral Hospital, was honored with the prestigious “Dr. AM Gokhale Award” during the Retina Conclave in Pune. This esteemed recognition pays tribute to his exceptional dedication and achievements in the field of ophthalmology, carrying forward the legacy of the renowned Dr. AM Gokhale, a revered educator in the realm of ophthalmology, whose students have gone on to become influential figures in the field.
Brigadier Sanjay Kumar Mishra, a native of Mau, Uttar Pradesh, received his education and training in Prayagraj. He has received several prestigious awards, including the Bar to Sena Medal (Distinguished), presented by the President of India shortly before January 26, 2021. Prior to this, he was honored with the Sena Medal and the Bar to Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM). During his tenure at Command Hospital Lucknow, he established the renowned Art Retinal Center in 2018, catering to patients from various states. Brigadier Mishra stands as one of the most highly decorated officers in the Indian Armed Forces Medical Services.
In addition to his illustrious career, Brigadier Mishra holds the unique distinction of being the sole ophthalmologist to have performed surgeries on two Presidents of India during his service, including Ram Nath Kovind. Previously, we reported that President Droupadi Murmu underwent cataract surgery in her right eye at the Army Hospital (Referral and Research), as confirmed by a communique from the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
