The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) celebrated a significant milestone as it commemorated its 95th Foundation and Technology Day at the National Agriculture Science Complex in Pusa, New Delhi. The event witnessed the presence of Narendra Singh Tomar, the Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, who served as the esteemed chief guest. As a notable change, the Foundation Day was rechristened as the ‘Foundation and Technology Day,’ underscoring the pivotal role of technology in agriculture.
The event served as a platform to showcase state-of-the-art technologies pioneered by various ICAR institutes, with the primary aim of enhancing agricultural production, quality, and farmer income. Cutting-edge and eco-friendly technologies designed for a wide range of crops, including rice, wheat, maize, pulses, oilseeds, millet (Shree Anna), and other commercially significant crops, took center stage. The occasion emphasized the significance of mechanization, precision farming, and value-added products, while highlighting the importance of sustainable and climate-resilient agricultural practices. Visitors had the opportunity to delve into ICAR’s robust extension system and educational innovations, which actively contribute to the successful promotion of agriculture.
ICAR, an autonomous body operating under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India, plays a vital role in coordinating, directing, and overseeing research and education in various agricultural domains, including horticulture, fisheries, and animal sciences. With 113 ICAR institutes and 74 agricultural universities situated across the country, ICAR remains at the forefront of pioneering research in the field of agricultural sciences.
India, as a food surplus nation, ensures sustenance for 800 million people within its borders. The agricultural products from India enjoy high demand worldwide, with millets gaining significant prominence during the International Year of Millets. Notably, the revenue generated from agricultural and horticultural exports has surpassed 50 billion US dollars, a testament to India’s agricultural prowess.
