Indian Technical Textile Industry to Cross $10 Billion in Exports by 2030

Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh announced on Friday that the Indian technical textile industry’s exports are expected to surpass $10 billion by 2030. At present, the global trade in technical textiles is valued at approximately $300 billion, while India’s domestic market stands at $25 billion with exports amounting to $2.6 billion.

Carbon Fibre Production

Singh highlighted that India aims to produce carbon fibre, a crucial material used in aerospace, civil engineering, and defence, by 2025-26. Currently, India relies on imports for its carbon fibre needs.

Importance of Technical Textiles

The minister emphasized the growing significance of man-made fibres and technical textiles in various sectors globally and domestically. The government is committed to advancing the technical textiles industry through several initiatives.

Government Initiatives

  • National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM): The government has launched this mission to foster growth in the sector.
  • PLI Scheme: The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme supports MMF fabric, apparel, and technical textiles.
  • Compendium Launch: Singh introduced the Compendium of NTTM and awarded confirmation certificates to 11 approved startups under this mission.

Research and Development

Under the National Technical Textiles Mission, 156 research projects have been sanctioned. These include the development of carbon fibres and support for startups in various technical textile domains.

Industry Confidence and Support

The minister expressed confidence in the local industry’s capability to develop high-performance fibres for applications in aerospace, automotive, and construction. He assured the government’s support in making India a global leader and major manufacturer in technical textiles.

State Government Initiatives

Minister of State for Textiles, Pabitra Margherita, mentioned that the country is progressing towards becoming self-reliant (Atmanirbhar) in all sectors, including technical textiles. She noted that several state governments are promoting investments, including foreign direct investment (FDI), in the technical textiles sector and encouraged other states to follow suit.

Call for Large-Scale Investments

The government has urged the industry and stakeholders to invest in the development of complex machinery to meet local demand and capture the global market.
