India has made a significant leap forward in the telecommunications sector by securing over 200 patents for 6G technology. The groundbreaking announcement was made during the inauguration of the Bharat 6G Alliance in New Delhi, led by Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Communications and IT Minister. Comprising key stakeholders from industry, academia, and the central government, the alliance has set its sights on spearheading all initiatives related to 6G technology in a systematic and comprehensive manner.
The primary objective of the Bharat 6G Alliance is to bring forth next-generation capabilities in communication, including improved reliability, ultra-low latency, and affordable solutions. With speeds nearly 100 times faster than 5G, the advent of 6G technology holds immense potential for revolutionizing communication and enabling the development of innovative applications that will shape the future.
Recognizing the ever-evolving nature of the telecom sector and the need to stay ahead of technological obsolescence, the Department of Telecommunications launched the Bharat 6G Alliance. This alliance goes beyond technical requirements and seeks to understand the business and societal needs of 6G technology. By fostering consensus, promoting open research, and encouraging development initiatives, the Bharat 6G Alliance aims to drive the design, development, and deployment of 6G technologies in India.
India’s achievements in the telecom sector extend beyond the realm of 6G. Over the past nine years, the government has made commendable efforts to bridge the digital divide by providing nearly 150,000 broadband connections in rural areas. These initiatives have empowered rural communities with access to affordable and reliable internet services, unlocking opportunities in education, healthcare, e-commerce, and overall socio-economic growth.
The launch of the Bharat 6G Alliance further underscores the government’s commitment to fostering the growth of the telecom sector. This milestone solidifies India’s position as one of the world’s top three 5G ecosystems, with an impressive number of 270,000 5G sites already prepared across the country. The government’s progressive reforms in reducing data costs have made data more accessible and affordable, positioning India as a leader in technology adoption.
