A historic achievement on YouTube’s live streaming platform has been unlocked by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The broadcast of the Chandrayaan-3 Mission Soft-landing, which took place on August 23, 2023, mesmerized an audience of over 8 million peak concurrent viewers (PCVs), propelling it to the status of the most-watched live stream globally.
Outshining all contenders in terms of peak concurrent viewers, the Chandrayaan-3 Mission soared above even the monumental Brazil vs Croatia football match from the FIFA World Cup 2022, which garnered 6.1 million PCVs, and the Brazil vs South Korea football match from the same tournament with 5.2 million PCVs. Additionally, ISRO’s feat surpassed the Cariocão 2023 Serie A semi-final between Vasco da Gama and Flamengo, which attracted 4.7 million PCVs. Notable contenders in this prestigious list encompass SpaceX’s Crew Demo-2 (4 million), the iconic K-pop sensation BTS’s ‘Butter’ Official MV (3.7 million), and the Johnny Depp v Amber Heard Defamation Trial (3.5 million).
The third lunar mission undertaken by India, Chandrayaan-3, garnered an exceptional audience during its live telecast, as both space enthusiasts and inquisitive minds tuned in eagerly to witness the pivotal moments of this endeavor.
This milestone catapults India to a distinguished realm, solidifying its place as the fourth nation—following the United States, China, and Russia—to achieve a triumphant moon landing. Yet, India’s victory is inscribed in history with a unique distinction, as it claims the pioneering honor of being the first nation to achieve a lunar touchdown on the southern hemisphere of Earth’s solitary natural satellite.
