How the names of Railway Stations are changed? What is the process?
Although the Indian Railways owns the stations, it does not have the power to rename them. A railway station’s renaming is a state matter. State governments submit requests to the MHA (Ministry of Home Affairs), which subsequently makes a decision while keeping the Ministry of Railways updated on the situation.
Before renaming, it is confirmed that no existing station in India bears the proposed new name. Railways assigns new station ‘codes’ for operation purposes. The new name, along with the code, must then be entered into the Indian railway’s data and system so that it appears on tickets, reservations, and train information.
