Introduction: Under the Sagarmala program, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways is leading the development of the National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) in Lothal, Gujarat. This visionary project, with an estimated cost of ₹4,500 crore, aims to establish a state-of-the-art facility that showcases India’s maritime heritage spanning ancient to contemporary eras. Through an innovative “edutainment approach” that incorporates cutting-edge technology, the complex aspires to become a global tourist attraction, promoting awareness of India’s rich maritime legacy.

Onsite Project Progress Review Meeting: A project progress review meeting has been scheduled on July 2, 2023, at Lothal, Gujarat, to evaluate the advancements made in the development of the NMHC. This meeting will provide an opportunity to assess the progress and discuss future plans for the complex.

Key Attractions of the NMHC: The National Maritime Heritage Complex will feature several remarkable attractions, including the world’s tallest lighthouse museum, offering visitors an unparalleled experience and breathtaking views of the maritime landscape. Additionally, it will boast the world’s largest open aquatic gallery, showcasing diverse marine life and emphasizing the significance of oceanic ecosystems. The complex will also house India’s grandest naval museum, presenting the evolution and importance of the country’s naval forces through captivating exhibits and interactive displays.

International Tourist Destination: With its array of attractions and immersive experiences, the NMHC aims to become one of the world’s premier international tourist destinations, enticing visitors from across the globe. By showcasing India’s maritime heritage in a compelling manner, the complex seeks to attract a large number of tourists and contribute to the economic development of the region.

Thematic Offerings and Galleries: The NMHC will comprise four theme parks, namely the Memorial theme park, Maritime and Navy theme park, Climate theme park, and Adventure and Amusement theme park. These parks will offer entertainment and educational experiences on various aspects of maritime history and culture. Additionally, the complex will house fourteen galleries that span India’s maritime heritage from the Harappan times to the present day. Each gallery will provide a comprehensive and engaging exploration of different historical periods.

Coastal States Pavilion: A dedicated Coastal States Pavilion within the complex will showcase the diverse maritime heritage of India’s states and union territories, highlighting their unique contributions to the country’s maritime history. This pavilion will serve as a celebration of the rich cultural diversity and regional influences that have shaped India’s maritime legacy.
