NTPC Limited, a distinguished Maharatna Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) functioning under the aegis of the Ministry of Power (MoP), has embarked on a groundbreaking venture with the launch of India’s pioneering hydrogen bus trial in the captivating landscapes of Leh, located in the Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh. This landmark initiative not only represents the nation’s first foray into hydrogen-fueled buses on public roads but also underscores NTPC’s unwavering dedication to fostering sustainability and curtailing carbon emissions.

The debut of the hydrogen bus in Leh signifies the initiation of a momentous three-month-long endeavor. This endeavor encompasses rigorous field trials, comprehensive assessments of roadworthiness, and crucial regulatory approvals – all pivotal strides toward seamlessly integrating hydrogen-powered buses into Ladakh’s intricate transportation framework.

NTPC’s strategic objectives seamlessly align with its vision of cultivating a carbon-neutral Ladakh. To manifest this vision, the company is orchestrating the establishment of a state-of-the-art hydrogen refueling station and an expansive solar power plant, boasting an impressive capacity of 1.7 MW. These dual infrastructure components play a central role in providing renewable energy to facilitate the hydrogen mobility initiative.

The fuel cell buses introduced by NTPC in Leh stand as technological marvels, purpose-built to flawlessly function amidst the demanding conditions prevailing at an elevation of 11,562 feet. The rarefied atmosphere and sub-zero temperatures inherent to such high-altitude locations pose unique challenges that these innovative buses are adeptly engineered to surmount.

NTPC’s aspirations extend far beyond the confines of the Ladakh project, encompassing a comprehensive commitment to renewable energy. The company envisions achieving a remarkable 60 GW of Renewable Energy capacity by the year 2032, underscoring its dedication to spearheading Green Hydrogen Technology and pioneering Energy Storage solutions.

NTPC’s efforts in the realm of decarbonization span a diverse spectrum of initiatives. These initiatives encompass trailblazing advancements like Hydrogen blending, pioneering Carbon Capture technologies, the introduction of Electric Vehicle (EV) buses, and the establishment of Smart NTPC Townships. Each of these undertakings significantly contributes to the overarching objective of diminishing carbon footprints and advancing sustainable practices.

Inaugurating India’s inaugural hydrogen bus trial in Leh signifies NTPC’s pioneering spirit and its unswerving dedication to a sustainable future. The integration of hydrogen-powered buses, the establishment of a dedicated solar power plant, and the innovation of solutions to address high-altitude challenges collectively serve as stepping stones toward a greener, more sustainable Ladakh, and by extension, a more environmentally conscious India.
