Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to virtually inaugurate the state-of-the-art integrated terminal building at Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair on July 18. The momentous event, conducted through video conferencing, will witness the presence of distinguished guests, including Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and Union Minister of State for Road, Transport and Highways and Civil Aviation, General (Retd.) V K Singh. Constructed at a cost of approximately Rs 710 crore, the new terminal serves as a crucial step in enhancing connectivity and bolstering tourism in the picturesque Andaman and Nicobar Islands. With its spacious design, sustainable features, and improved infrastructure, the terminal represents progress, development, and a steadfast commitment to environmental responsibility.
Spanning a total built-up area of around 40,800 sqm, the integrated terminal boasts an impressive capacity to handle approximately 50 lakh passengers annually. Notably, an Apron capable of accommodating two Boeing-767-400 and two Airbus-321 aircraft has also been constructed at Port Blair airport, with an investment of Rs 80 crore. The terminal’s architectural design features a captivating shell-shaped structure, symbolizing the region’s deep connection with the sea and islands.
Emphasizing environmental sustainability, the new airport terminal incorporates several notable features. Advanced cooling technology reduces heat gain, enhancing energy efficiency and ensuring passenger comfort. Strategically placed skylights maximize natural sunlight utilization, minimizing reliance on artificial lighting. Energy-efficient LED lighting has been implemented to reduce overall energy consumption, while low heat gain glazing aids in maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature.
Water conservation efforts are promoted through the integration of an underground water tank for rainwater catchment, while 100 percent of treated wastewater is utilized for landscaping, exemplifying responsible water management. Furthermore, the installation of a 500 KW capacity solar power plant harnesses renewable energy sources, aligning with sustainable practices.
As the primary gateway to the enchanting Andaman and Nicobar islands, Port Blair attracts a substantial number of tourists. The introduction of the new integrated terminal building, with its spacious design and enhanced infrastructure, is expected to drive increased air traffic and further bolster tourism in the region.
