During the 56th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM) in Jakarta, Saudi Arabia officially acceded to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC), solidifying its position as the 51st country to join the treaty. The signing ceremony, held on July 12, symbolizes Saudi Arabia’s unwavering commitment to embrace the values and principles of ASEAN as enshrined in the TAC. The treaty emphasizes the importance of cooperation, collaboration, and the upholding of international law in order to promote peace and stability, not only within Southeast Asia but also extending to the broader global landscape. Against the backdrop of the current geopolitical dynamics, these values and principles hold increasing significance.
Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi of Indonesia, on behalf of ASEAN, expressed sincere appreciation to Saudi Arabia for becoming part of the ASEAN family. Minister Marsudi emphasized the collective responsibility of all member countries to contribute positively to peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region. The accession ceremony witnessed the presence of ASEAN Foreign Ministers and the ASEAN Secretary General, further highlighting the significance of Saudi Arabia’s inclusion.
The official signing of the TAC by Saudi Arabia marks a significant milestone in broadening the treaty’s reach and influence beyond the boundaries of ASEAN member nations. Prior to Saudi Arabia, Ukraine was the most recent country to accede to the TAC in 2022. Notably, Papua New Guinea was the first non-ASEAN country to join the TAC in 1989.
The commitment of Saudi Arabia to the TAC is anticipated to foster stronger ties between the Kingdom and ASEAN nations, thereby promoting regional peace, stability, and cooperation within the Indo-Pacific region.
