On May 2, Sharad Pawar, former Union Minister, and four-time Maharashtra Chief Minister, announced his decision to step down as President of the Nationalist Congress Party.
The move comes amidst rumors of his nephew and senior NCP leader Ajit Pawar’s possible switch to the BJP. During the release of his second edition of political memoirs in Mumbai, the 82-year-old leader stated that he would not contest any future elections but would remain active in public life.
He plans to focus on issues related to Maharashtra in India, with an emphasis on education, agriculture, cooperation, sports, and culture. Additionally, he pledged to pay attention to issues concerning youth, students, workers, Dalits, tribal and other weaker sections of society. He has three years remaining in the Rajya Sabha, during which he intends to serve his state without taking any responsibility.
A committee comprising senior members, including Supriya Sule, Ajit Pawar, Jayant Patil, Chhagan Bhujbal, and Praful Patel, will be formed to decide who should succeed him as the party’s chief. The panel will strive to promote the party’s growth, goals, and ideology while serving the people. Mr. Pawar will continue to attend public events and meetings, and work tirelessly to address the people’s problems, despite stepping down from his position as President.
