In a spectacular display of skill and determination at the Hangzhou Asian Games, Tajinderpal Singh Toor of India etched his name in the annals of sports history. Toor’s exceptional performance not only secured him a gold medal in the men’s shot put but also marked him as the fourth Indian shot putter in history to successfully defend his Asian Games gold.

Tajinderpal Singh Toor joins the esteemed company of Parduman Singh Brar, Joginder Singh, and Bahadur Singh Chouhan, distinguished shot putters who had previously achieved this remarkable feat in the Asian Games.

Toor faced initial setbacks with two of his throws being ruled out. However, his determination and skill shone through as he launched a legal throw measuring an impressive 19.51 meters in his third attempt. At this juncture, Saudi Arabia’s Mohamed Daouda Tolo led with a best throw of 19.93 meters.

Undeterred, Toor swiftly turned the tide in his favor with a colossal throw of 20.06 meters in his fourth attempt, catapulting himself into the coveted gold medal position. While Tolo countered with a throw of 20.18 meters, Toor reserved his best for last, unleashing a monumental 20.36-meter throw in his sixth and final attempt. Tolo’s valiant efforts fell short, and he had to settle for the silver medal.

Notably, Toor recently established a new Asian record by propelling the shot put to an extraordinary distance of 21.77 meters, securing gold at the National Inter-State Championships in June. Despite facing a groin injury and undergoing surgery on the left wrist of his throwing arm following the Tokyo Olympics, Toor’s unwavering dedication and resilience have propelled him back to the sport in peak form.

Shot put has long been a realm of Indian excellence, and Tajinderpal Singh Toor’s outstanding performance continues this rich tradition. India holds the distinction of being the most successful nation in the history of men’s shot put at the Asian Games, boasting a total of nine gold medals earned in the event across the previous 18 editions of the games. Toor’s achievement adds another shining chapter to India’s illustrious legacy in this discipline.
