In a heartwarming gesture of recognition and encouragement, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin recently paid tribute to nine eminent space scientists hailing from the state. These scientists, including illustrious figures like K Sivan and Mylswamy Annadurai, have left an indelible mark on India’s space program with their remarkable contributions. The occasion for this celebration was a special event held in Chennai on October 2, 2023.
The Chief Minister commenced the event by acknowledging the extraordinary journeys of these scientists. It was particularly noteworthy that six out of the nine honorees received their education in government schools in Tamil Nadu. Chief Minister Stalin emphasized that these scientists, born in small towns and from humble family backgrounds, had risen to prominence through their unwavering commitment to education and personal development. Their stories serve as an inspiring testament to the potential of young minds in the state to pursue their dreams and excel in the field of science.
During the ceremony, Chief Minister Stalin made two significant announcements that underscored the government’s appreciation for these outstanding scientists and their dedication to the nation.
Firstly, a cash award of Rs. 25 lakh would be presented to each of the nine scientists as a token of gratitude for their relentless hard work and dedication to advancing India’s space endeavors. The Chief Minister urged them to continue bringing pride to the nation through their exceptional contributions to space research and technology.
Secondly, in a move aimed at fostering scientific innovation and education, the government announced plans to establish a scholarship program in honor of the renowned scientist, benefiting nine postgraduate engineering students. A substantial corpus of Rs. 10 crore would be allocated for this initiative, covering all essential expenses, including tuition and hostel fees.
The postgraduate scholarship program has a special focus on government school students who pursued undergraduate engineering courses, having benefited from the 7.5% quota and financial assistance provided by the government during their undergraduate studies. This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to nurturing and supporting young talents in the field of science and technology, ensuring that future generations have the resources and opportunities to shine on the global stage.
