The Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC) has made a significant decision to reappoint Tushar Mehta as the Solicitor General of India for a three-year term. Alongside him, six Additional Solicitor Generals (ASGs) in the Supreme Court, namely Vikramjeet Banerjee, KM Nataraj, Balbir Singh, Suryaprakash V Raju, N Venkatraman, and Aishwarya Bhati, have been granted extensions, with the duration of their terms yet to be issued. This reaffirms the government’s confidence in their expertise and contributions in effectively representing and defending the government’s interests in complex legal matters.

As the second-highest law officer in the country, the role of the Solicitor General is pivotal in representing the government’s interests in various legal proceedings. Tushar Mehta has been serving in this esteemed position since October 2018, and his reappointment reflects the government’s satisfaction with his performance and the trust placed in his abilities during his tenure. The office of the Solicitor General carries out a significant portion of the central government’s litigation across the country, making it an integral position in the legal system.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), established on January 26, 1950, plays a key role in making appointments to various high-level positions. Led by Chairperson Narendra Modi, the committee also includes Union Minister Amit Shah, who oversees the ACC’s functioning. Notably, R. Venkataramani currently serves as the Attorney General for India, holding the highest law officer position in the country.
