The 2022 World Athletics Championships, the eighteenth edition of the World Athletics Championships, are currently being held in Eugene, Oregon, United States, from July 15–24, 2022.
They were originally scheduled for August 6–15, 2021; on April 8, 2020, World Athletics announced that the event would be postponed by one year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting postponement of the 2020 Summer Olympics.
On 11 March 2022, World Athletics announced a new team event trophy would be awarded, based on points won in the individual events. After the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, World Athletics banned all Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials from participating at the championships.
The event faces problems granting visas to participants – preventing around 100 athletes, coaches and officials from entering the United States.
The World Athletics Championships are a biennial athletics competition organized by World Athletics (formerly IAAF, International Association of Athletics Federations).
Alongside the Olympic Games, they represent the highest level championships of senior international outdoor athletics competition for track and field athletics globally, including marathon running and race walking. Separate World Championships are held by World Athletics for certain other outdoor events, including cross-country running and half-marathon, as well as indoor and age-group championships.
