Celebrate the Auspicious Festival of Guru Purnima in 2023

Guru Purnima, an auspicious festival deeply rooted in Hindu traditions, holds a significant place in the hearts of devotees. Observed on the full moon day in the month of Ashadha (July to August), Guru Purnima 2023 will grace our lives on July 3rd. Celebrated across India, Nepal, and Bhutan, this festival reverberates with the essence of the revered Guru-Shishya relationship.

On this sacred day, devotees express their reverence and seek blessings from their Gurus. The Guru, occupying a paramount position in one’s life, guides and illuminates the path of their shishyas (disciples) through their teachings and wisdom. Gurus inspire us to embrace righteousness and tread the path of truth by dispelling illusions. With their blessings and guidance, Gurus illuminate the darkest corners of our lives.

In the pursuit of leading a virtuous life, a Guru becomes an indispensable guide. Their blessings are sought before undertaking any noble endeavor. Gurus play a pivotal role in shaping our character and instilling a sense of humanity within us. They assume various roles, serving as spiritual advisors, teachers, leaders, protectors, healers, and upholders of Dharma.

According to Hindu mythology, there was a sage named Parashar whose son was born on this auspicious day. He possessed profound knowledge of the past, present, and future (bhootkaal, vartmaan kaal, and bhavishya kaal). Recognizing the spiritual and religious decline among people, he edited the four Vedas into four parts to disseminate knowledge. Thus, he earned the title of an ancient Guru, and his birthday came to be celebrated as Guru Purnima.

To celebrate Guru Purnima:

  • Begin your day by respectfully touching the feet of your parents, acknowledging them as the first Gurus in your life.
  • Take a purifying bath and offer prayers to the deities.
  • Recite the Guru mantra with devotion.
  • Seek the blessings of your spiritual Guru by reverentially touching their feet.
  • Express your gratitude and reverence by offering clothes, fruits, and dakshina (a token of appreciation) on this sacred day of Guru Purnima.
