Neeraj Chopra, an extraordinary talent in the world of Javelin Throw, emerged from humble beginnings in Khandra village near Panipat, Haryana. Born into a farming family, Neeraj’s remarkable ascent to success began when he encountered Jaiveer, a Javelin athlete practicing at Panipat Stadium. Impressed by Neeraj’s natural throwing ability, Jaiveer became his first coach, igniting a passion that would shape his future.
At just 13 years old, Neeraj joined the Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex in Panipat, where he dedicated himself to long-distance running and Javelin throw. His hard work paid off when he achieved a distance of approximately 55 meters, showcasing his potential.
Neeraj’s talent quickly gained recognition as he became the under-16 national champion in 2012, setting a new record with a throw of 68.40 meters at the Junior Nationals in Lucknow. He made his mark on the international stage in the 2013 World Youth Championships held in Ukraine, securing his first international medal. Neeraj continued to excel, setting records at various national and international competitions, including a remarkable throw of 81.06 meters in the junior category.
In 2016, Neeraj’s breakthrough came at the South Asian Games in Guwahati, where he won the gold medal with a throw of 82.23 meters. His journey continued to progress under the guidance of esteemed coaches such as Uwe Hohn, Gary Calvert, and Werner Daniels. Neeraj’s exceptional performances caught the attention of the Indian Army, leading to his appointment as a Junior Commissioned Officer in the Rajputana Rifles.
Notable achievements followed as Neeraj secured gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in 2018 and the Asian Games later that year. However, an elbow injury temporarily sidelined him from Javelin Throw for eight months in 2019.
Neeraj’s crowning moment came at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, where he etched his name in history as India’s first track and field Olympic gold medalist. With a remarkable throw of 87.58 meters, he clinched the gold medal and joined the esteemed ranks of Abhinav Bindra as an individual Olympic gold medalist for India.
