Why girls get periods: Most girls get their first period around the age of 12. But, they can also get periods between the age of 10 and 15.
Signs and Symptoms of starting of period at the age of 12
- Most of the time, a girl gets her period about 2 years after her breasts start to develop.
- Another sign is vaginal discharge fluid (sort of like mucus) that a girl might see or feel on her underwear. This discharge usually begins about 6 months to a year before a girl gets her first period.
What is a period or menstruation?
Menstruation, or period, is normal vaginal bleeding that occurs as part of a woman’s monthly cycle. Every month, your body prepares for pregnancy. If no pregnancy occurs, the uterus, or womb, sheds its lining. The menstrual blood is partly blood and partly tissue from inside the uterus.

What is the reason of period or menstruation? Why women have periods?
A period happens because of changes in hormones in the body. Hormones are chemical messengers. The ovaries release the female hormones estrogen and progesterone . Due to these hormones, the lining of the uterus (or womb) builds up. The built-up lining is ready for a fertilized egg to attach to and start developing. If there is no fertilized egg, the lining breaks down and bleeds. In simple language if girl does not get pregnant, then periods take place.

It usually takes about a month for the lining to build up, then break down. That is why most girls and women get their periods around once a month.
How Long Do Periods Last? What is the normal time of a period or normal menstrual cycle?
Periods usually last about 5 days. But a period can be shorter or last longer. The length of the menstrual cycle varies from woman to woman, but the average is to have periods every 28 days. Regular cycles that are longer or shorter than this, from 21 to 40 days, are normal.
How Much Blood is released during periods in girls?
A girl usually loses a few tablespoons of blood during the whole period.
Women get periods till what age?
When women reach menopause (around age of 45‒55 years), their periods will permanently stop. Women also won’t have a period while they are pregnant.
What Is PMS?
PMS (premenstrual syndrome) is when a girl has emotional and physical symptoms that happen before or during her period. These symptoms can include moodiness, sadness, anxiety, bloating, and acne. The symptoms go away after the first few days of a period.
What is the reason of cramps during periods?
Cramps are caused by the hormone-like lipids called prostaglandins that make your uterus contract to help get rid of its lining. Prostaglandins are also involved in the inflammation and pain responses. They reside in the uterine lining and are also released from this lining.
Once released, they increase the force of the contractions during the first couple days of your period. The higher the level of prostaglandins, the more severe the cramping is.
Very high levels can also cause nausea and diarrhea. As the lining is shed, the levels of prostaglandins in your body is lowered. This is why cramps typically subside after the first couple of days of your period.
How to reduce the Cramps?
Many girls have cramps with their period, especially in the first few days. In case of pain, you can use –
- a warm heating pad on your belly
- ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, or store brand) or naproxen (Aleve or store brand)
Can girls get pregnant during periods?
Periods doesn’t protect you from pregnancy. Some women may bleed when their ovaries release an egg each month, called ovulation, and mistake it for their period. You’re at your peak fertility when you ovulate. So if you have sex during this time, it could actually make you more likely to get pregnant.
You may ovulate before your period is over or within a few days after the bleeding stops. Since sperm can hang out in your body for up to 3 days, having sex during your period could lead to conception.
